Somewhere between second and third grade, I decided I was going to become an electrical engineer. Why? Because having electricity cut off while I was watching The Powerpuff Girls was clearly unacceptable. I went on to ask my dad what I could do about it and he convinced me that studying electrical engineering would give me the knowledge I would need to solve power generation, transmission, and distribution issues that were way too common in Tanzania. Somewhere during that conversation, I realized I was years away from becoming an electrical engineer and he convinced me that focusing on subjects like math and later on physics would be great starting points. Needless to say, I was disappointed to learn that in the short-term, the only thing I could do about the electricity shortage problem was my homework.

I didn’t become an electrical engineer but that’s a different story. What hasn’t changed is my desire to become an effective problem solver. “What can I do about it?” is always the first question that comes to my mind whenever I see a gap between where I want to be and where I actually am. The good news is that the answer to that question, if we’re rigorous, determined, and a bit lucky, is rarely “Nothing”.
